Special Education
Should a pupil require added support in the area of Literacy or Numeracy, help is near at hand through our Special Education Team (SEN) made up of Fiona Henry and Kathleen Doyle, along with our principal Siobhán Hanly. Keeping in mind the principles laid out in the Circular 02/05 on Special Education and our own Policy on Special Education Needs they will do all they can to support the child’s learning and progress.
Class teachers’ observations and concerns coupled with those of the parents are used to identify the pupils needing support under the Continuum of Support model. This is provided through in-class support, small group support sessions or with one -to one support in the primary areas of Literacy skills (phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency) as well as skills in Numeracy. Support is also provided for pupils experiencing social and emotional difficulties with the help of programmes such as Walk Tall and Friends for Life to name just two.
Support Teaching takes place in our Support Rooms or in-class (team teaching) so as to maximise the pupils’ learning outcomes.
