SENIOR INFANTS 2015/2016

Active School Week 2016
What a fantastic week we had! We started every day with a 'wake up and shake up' dance. We styled our scooters, went on a school walk, enjoyed 'playball' and took it in turns taking home 'Active Annie'. We ended 'Active School Week' on a high with our sports day. Our races included balancing a bean bag on our heads, an egg and spoon race, a sack race and a sprint. We had a blast!

Capacity
We loved learning about capacity in Maths.
We explored lots of containers of all shapes and sizes and we estimated  how many smaller containers would fill the larger ones. For example we estimated how many teaspoons of water would fill a teacup and how many plastic cups would fill a lunchbox.
We worked in groups and took it in turns of filling the containers. Luckily we managed to keep most of the water in the basins! :)

Butterflies
We have really enjoyed watching our the growth of our five butterflies.
They began as tiny caterpillars. Everyday they grew a little more.
Then they formed cocoons and stayed in them for several days.
We were so excited when the colourful butterflies started to hatch out of them.
It wasn't long before it was time to set the butterflies free into their natural habitat.
We gave them all a clap and a cheer as they flew off into the distance!

Our trip to Pine Forest Art Centre

What a great time we had at Pine Forest! Our jam packed day started with an adventurous nature walk. We walked through a forest and then across the bridge to Wicklow (Yes- we really walked from Dublin to Wicklow!!). Some of us spotted a deer running in the distance! Then we climbed a steep hill and at the top of the hill was a Hawthorn tree with a fairy door. We all made a wish and blew it towards the magical tree. Next we went back to the centre to make monster straws, pictures of different animals and fans. We stopped for lunch and had a little picnic outside. After lunch there was time to play on the slide on the hill. We had a brilliant day!
Making our wishes at the fairy door

We loved the fairy doors at pine forest so much that we decided to make our very own ones in school the next day!!

Maths fun

We have been busy learning 'The story of 10'. Using two hoops and ten cubes, counters or pasta pieces we explored all the different ways we can make the story of 10. It was such a nice day that we decided to go outside and do it!

The Garden

Our theme for April is 'The Garden' and what better way to explore our theme than spending time in our lovely school garden! We explored the garden by drawing what we could see and what sounds we could hear around us. We were really excited when we saw a blue tit as we had been learning all about them! Here are some pictures of us in the garden!
We loved using the clipboards for our worksheets!!
Next we did some planting. we planted pink and purple 'Gladioli' in our very own flower bed. we cant wait to see them grow.

Spring is in the air

We have been learning about the signs of spring. We went out to the garden and looked for all the signs of spring around us. We used the ipads to take photographs of Spring flowers, buds on the trees, and blossoms.

Butter Making

We had so much fun learning about how butter is made. We used empty containers with lids, cream and a marble. We worked in our groups shaking the containers of cream as hard as we could. The marble helped to churn the cream quicker.

We sang this rhyme as we made the butter:
Shake it up, shake it down, shake it all around,
Shake it high, shake it low, shake it to and fro,
Shake it over, shake it under- pretty soon we'll have butter!!!
Soon we started to notice the cream change colour and it was sticking together in a lump of butter! We tasted our own home made butter on crackers and we loved it! yummy!

Science Experiment

We have been doing lots of activities based on the story 'The Three Little Pigs' in Senior Infants. One activity we really enjoyed was testing different materials to see how strong they are. We 'huffed and puffed' and tried to blow them down..

In Autumn
by Winifred C. Marshall

They're coming down in showers, The leaves all gold and red;
They're covering the little flowers, And tucking them in bed.
They've spread a fairy carpet, All up and down the street;
And when we skip along to school, they rustle 'neath our feet.
