Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025

What a great week we had to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge here in school. All the classes enjoyed watching our very own Irish Dancers and Musicians perform for us in the hall. They were also wowed by the visit of some very talented musicians from Coláiste Eoin and Coláiste Íosagáin who played a selection of some traditional Irish tunes and their very own musical medley. The girls had great fun in the yard ag súgradh (playing) cluichí (games) with the girls from Coláiste Íosagáin using as much Irish as possible and the much loved Tráth na gCeist ( Irish Quiz) was well received by all in the Junior Side. Some classes got to enjoy a cinema outing while others got to enjoy yoga, baking and art as Gaeilge and everyone got to show off their dancing skills at at very own School Céilí and final day assembly. It was   a great week with lots of spraoí (fun) for us all. Special thanks to Ms Cumiskey for putting so much time into organising the whole week. Bhí sé ar fheabhas! It was fantastic!

Every year in Our Lady of Mercy Convent School, we celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge. This gives us all an opportunity to enjoy our Irish culture and language. This year, Seachtain na Gaeilge wil be celebrated from Monday the 11th to Friday  15th of March

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2024

'Bhaineamar an taitneamh as' ( we all really enjoyed) this year's Seachtain na Gaeilge. Beginning on Monday, we all got to enjoy some amazing traditional Irish Dancing performed by girls from our own school, followed by a group of very talented musicians from our neighbouring schools, Coláiste Eoin and Coláiste Íosagáin who entertained us with a wonderful selection of traditional Irish songs and tunes. All the classes learnt their own Irish Dance Steps in preparation for our Ceilí Mór (Big dance display) on Friday.  It was just 'go iontach', great to hear so much Irish being spoken and used across all areas of the curriculum and timpeall na scoile (around the school) especially on Wednesday for our Lá Gaeilge Irish Day. To finish off our great week, we had the most enjoyable assembly and Ceol Choirm followed by our Ceilí Mór with everyone participating and having lots of fun. Thanks to all the teachers for their input into Seachtain na Gaeilge and in particular to Ms Cumiskey for all her work in organising and co-ordinating the whole week's event. Bhí sé ar fheabhas ar fad!
(It was really fantastic!)

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2023

The celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish Week) here in Our Lady of Mercy, Wednesday the 8th  to Thursday the 16th of March proved to be yet another very special week on the school calendar as reflected in the attached video. As well as celebrating our Irish culture, traditions and language, we also got to enjoy and participate in a range of activities and events, ag baint úsáid as na cúpla focail (using a few words of Irish) and having lots of spraoi (fun) to make it a very successful week for us all.

We were treated to a delightful performance of traditional Irish dances by some of the dancers who attend Ms Ní Fhaoláin.s
after - school dance class and 8 of our own girls who are members of the local Ogra Irish Dance School. They wowed us with their dancing ability and agility in showcasing a selection of  jigs and reels which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Míle buíochas d'Iníon Ní Fhaoláin (a thousand thanks to Ms Ni Fhaoláin) who  organised a Céili Mór for both the junior and senior classesThe girls had so much fun and this, coupled with the upbeat sound of traditional Irish music really added to the buzz and the atmosphere around the school throughout the day. The Junior Classes enjoyed equal measures of fun while learning and performing their ceilí dancing in the hall on Friday and according to Ms Ni Fhaoláin there were many 'Jean Butlers' to be found on the floor!!

Tráth na gCeist

Bhi an sport ag gach dalta a ghlac páirt i dTráth na gCeist. Every girl who participated in the Irish Table Quiz appropriate to their own age group had so much fun as well as picking up lots of useful pieces of information from them too. The collaboration and team tactics used to beat the opponents were very much to the fore in the hall making it a tense and competitive afternoon all round.

'Giggles'
An Fear Ghrinn

What a great day we had here in school on Friday the 24th to complete our Seachtain na Gaeilge activities with the return visit of Giggles the clown or Giggles an Fear Ghrinn as we came to know him best. As well as being a colourful, cheerful, friendly clown, we also enjoyed his balloon making skills and his many words of wisdom using his own gaeilge líofa (fluent Irish). The roars of laughter and words of praise from all the classes who attended his shows were testament to his magic and good spirt.
Go raibh míle maith agat Giggles, bhi tú ar fheabhas! Thank you Giggles you were fantastic
