Learning and having fun with Ms Mc Mahon
We have been learning lots of new and interesting things with Ms Mc Mahon and having fun along the way too. We have been doing dance in PE, learning about capacity in maths, making butter as part of science, learning about The Last Supper in religion, ainmhithe sa zú as Gaeilge, making scarecrows in art and lots more too. A big thank you to Ms Mc Mahon for teaching us!
We designed scarecrows!
Seachtain na Gaeilge may have finished last week but the fun continued today when we were entertained by a visit from a fear ghrinn (clown!) He made us laugh controllably and we had SO much fun while also learning lots of new Irish vocabulary too. A huge 'go raibh maith agat' to MS Henry for organising such a great morning.
We went out for a walk around our school grounds today to look for signs of spring. We did the same walk about 5 weeks ago and we went out today so we could compare what we saw then to what we can see now. There were so many more signs of spring today.. There were buds appearing, daffodils and crocuses in full bloom, nests in trees, birds singing, bees buzzing and the sun doing its very best to shine through the clouds! Such beauty on our doorstep :-)
Fancy a hot chocolate? We do!
We have been working on 'dairy' over the past few weeks and learning the road milk takes from grass to tabl.e. Lots of foods are made from milk and many people have milk allergies. When you go into a shop you will see that you can buy so many different types of milk. To finish our work on dairy, our teacher made us a hot chocolate today. You need milk to make i.t. We went to the teacher's staff room and we all enjoyed having a giggle with our friends and treasured every mouthful of our delicious drink. It was the perfect start to our St. Patrick's Day long weekend :-)
Lá le Pádraigh!
We're celebrating all things Irish this week and we decorated our classroom windows with Ireland flags deisgned using cotton buds and paint. Check them out!
Dé Máirt: Tráth na gCeist
Bhí tráth na gceist againn inniu agus bhí sé ar fheabhas. We had a table quiz today and it was brilliant.
Bhí orainn ceisteanna a fhreagairt as Gaeilge agus chabhraigh na cailíní i rang a sé linn. We had to answer questions in Irish and the girls in 6th class helped us.
Níl a fhios againn go foill cé a bhuaigh ach is cuma linn.....an rud is tábhachtaí ná go raibh ana chuid spraoi againn! We don't know yet who won but it doesn't matter....the most important thing is that we had so much fun!

Dé Luain: Sli na Sláinte
Chuamar ar shiúlóid inniu agus rinneamar iarracht cúpla focail Gaeilge a labhairt freisin. We went on a walk today and tried to speak a few Irish words too.
Bhaineamar taitneamh as an maidin agus bhí spraoi againn lenár gcairde. We enjoyed our morning and we had fun with our friends.

Dé hAoine: Ag damhsa le Ms Ní Fhaoláin
Mhúin Ms NÍ Fhaoláin damhsa Gaelach dúinn inniu agus bhaineamar an-taitneamh as. Ms Ní Fhaoláin taught us an Irish dance today and we really enjoyed it.
Damhsóirí nádúrtha atáimid :-) We're natural dancers :-)

Dé hAoine: Yoga as Gaeilge
Rinne beirt cailíní as rang a sé yoga linn inniu agus bhí sé ar fheabhas. 2 girls from 6th class did yoga with us today andi it was brilliant.
Thug siad na treoracha as Gaeilge agus thaispeáin siad na céimeanna difriúla dúinn. They gave us the directions through Irish and showed us the different steps.
Mhothaigh muid go hiontach ina dhiaidh. We felt great afterwards :-)

Dé Ceadaoin: Caife Caidrimh agus Damhsa Gaelach
Thosaigh Seachtain na Gaeilge inniu agus bhí an-spórt againn. Seachtain na Gaeilge started today and we had great fun.
D'itheamar cáca beaga agus d'ólamar deoch oráiste ag caife caidrimh. We ate a small cake and drank orange at caife caidrimh.
Rinne cailíní ó na hárd ranganna damhsa Gaelach duinn sa trathnóna agus bhí siad ar fheabhas. Girls from the older classes did an Irish dance for us and they were brilliant.
Lá iontach a bhí ann! It was a great day!

We're celebrating World Book Day here in junior infants by writing our very own books. We became authors and we worked hard on writing books called 'Healthy Living.' Each page had a sentence about how to live healthily and a picture to go with it. We then designed the front cover of our book and made sure we were happy with the final draft! Look at what we made! In years to come when we might be famous authors we will remember where it all began......
From grass to glass
It finally arrived....yes today is Pancake Tuesday and we all tucked into a pancake! Oooops....we may have left a little evidence of chocolate on our faces!
We are learning the journey milk goes through from cow to table as part of our work on dairy. Today our teacher gave us a packet of cards and we had to put them in order from the first step of when a cow eats grass, to the last step when we put the milk we buy in the fridge. We had to work with the girls in our group and agree on the final order. There was lots of discussion (and debate!!!) at times but we finally agreed on what we thought was the right order. Let us share with you how milk goes from being grass to being in our tummies!
A cow eats good quality grass.
The cow's stomach changes the grass to milk.
It is stored in the cow's udder.
The farmer milks the cow by hand or machine.
A tanker collects the milk.
The milk is heated to kill germs.
Fat is taken out or flavourings, vitamins and protein are added to the milk.
The milk is put into cartons and bottles.
The milk is delivered to the shops.
We buy it and store it in our fridge at home.

We love using our school hall!
It's the simple things in life that make life magical and this was certainly the way we felt today when we got to use our school hall for the first time. Covid restrictions have meant we had to do PE outside all year come hail, rain or snow but today, we did our PE lesson indoors. This was a good thing because we have been working hard on learning how to use tennis rackets and tennis balls this month. Balancing & bouncing balls on tennis rackets without the wind cutting through us certainly did make it a lot more manageable and enjoyable too!!
There may be a storm outside as the wind blows down our classroom displays but here in Junior Infants we are determined to celebrate the arrival of Spring!!
Buds are appearing on trees, daffodils are blooming, the days are getting longer, the baby lambs are being born and caterpillars are busy growing into butterflies. We used marshmallows to make caterpillar prints and if it wasn't for the fact they were covered in paint...those marshmallows would have made their way into our mouths behind our teacher's back!!!
Caterpillars will grow into colourful butterflies and our artwork has certainly brought Spring sunshine to the corridor even if the sun isn't shining outside yet :-)

Well we were all loved up in Junior Infants today as we celebrated Valentine's Day in school. Firstly when we came into our class the PA had decorated it with balloons and love hearts which made our classroom look so pretty. They had also left each child some yummy treats to enjoy which made us all squeal with excitement! The smiles continued as we baked chocolate chip muffins for our amazing mummies and daddies as a valentine's day gift to tell them we love them so much. Look how beautiful we looked too in our pink and red clothes as we raised money for Temple Street and the Jack and Jill Foundation. !
After a long winter, we are so happy that spring has finally arrived! We went on a nature walk today to look for signs of spring. Even though it's still only early in the season, we were so surprised to see so many signs of spring. We saw birds, buds on trees, daffodils, snowdrops, bird nests, insects, the shining sun and freshly cut grass. We are going to do the same spring walk in a month and compare what we see then to what we saw today. We had great fun with our friends as we explored our beautiful school grounds.
We're going bananas about Healthy Living!
We've been having lots of fun getting creative and going a little bit bananas along the way! Check out our super cute banana characters!!
We have been having lots of fun learning ball skills every week with Shauna. You might even see us playing for Dublin some day and you'll know where it all began.........
Having a jolly good time with Jolly Phonics!
Now that we are experts at reading, we had lots of fun playing Jolly Phonics snakes and ladders with our friends! Roll the dice, move along, read the words, reach the end. First to finishing line is the winner!
International and Healthy Living Week
17th - 21st January
This week we are celebrating International and Healthy Living Week in our school. We are enjoying lots of fun activities and learning so much about other countries and how to live a healthy life. Here are some of the things we have been getting up to!
The awards for Healthy Living and International Week go to.....
National Costume Day - look at our style!
International items for our investigation table
The finished product of our observational drawings!
We made flags to celebrate the different nationalities in our class
We made a delicious berry smoothie!
Learning about the food pyramid and sorting food packets into categories
Our healthy living fruit mosaics
Exploring, examining and chatting about a range of fruits
Observational drawing of a fruit bowl
Fruits have many different shades of colour on their peel. We tried to remember this when we added colour to our fruit drawings.
The nationalities we are so lucky to have in our class are: Indian, Brazilian, Irish, Polish and Chinese
We are independent young girls and we're able to pull our weight around the house! So to give our wonderful mummies and daddies a break, we are learning how to fold laundry so we can help out with the household chores. Just don't ask us to do it when we're watching our favourite movie.....or when we're playing.......or when we're tired.....or when we're eating.......or when we're on the trampoline......or when we're doing homework........actually YES, WE'LL DO IT WHEN WE'RE DOING OUR HOMEWORK!!!!!
Knock on the door and look inside, see who's on the other side!!
We all have a family name which is special to each one of us. We all belong to a family. Would you like to visit our homes and come and meet our families? Come and have a look!
Christmas holidays today and we were a giddy and excited little bunch!!
The Christmas Panto came to us!
All the children in our school were treated to the most amazing day today because it was Christmas panto day! We all watched Red Riding Hood on the big screen and tucked into popcorn and jellies. A perfect start to the Christmas fun that's to come!
We baked Christmas treats!
We made delicious caramel rice crispie Christmas puddings this week with just a little help from our teacher! They were so tasty and some of us are going to make them for Santa this year. He's in for a real treat :-)
We decorated our classroom door for Christmas!
The student council suggested that every class decorate their classroom door for Christmas and what a fun task it was! We set to work colouring Christmas stockings. We had to use lots of colours, stay inside the lines and make them the most beautiful stockings Santa has ever seen! We put them on our classroom door and we think you'll agree, they have totally transformed our very normal door into something very special. You can barely recognise that it's even a door anymore!! Don't they look amazing!
Tá an Nollaig ag teacht!
Christmas is coming!
Our teacher got a message from Santa to say that he loves when children write a letter to him as Gaeilge (in Irish)! He doesn't get very many of them so he especially enjoys reading those letters. So we wrote Santa a litir (letter) and our múinteoir (teacher) has sent Santa a griangraf (photo) of them all and we are really excited to hear what Daidí na Nollag (Santa / Father Christmas) says back to us :-)
Guess what, our múinteoir got a litir today from Daidí na Nollag. He said in his litir that he loved reading our litreacha and that he has a hata and cóta dearg (a red hat and coat), lots of breagáin (toys) and he likes brioscaí agus bainne (biscuits and milk). He told our múinteoir to give us each a milseán (sweet) and he sent us Christmas stickers for our fuinneoga (windows). You can read his litir below!

Our Christmas artwork - Santa's reindeer are on the way!
Why do we not wear a coat made from paper in the rain? Why are window panes not made from wood? Why is a baby blanket not made from plastic? It's all because the materials you use need to be suitable for the job they have to do. That's why you wipe a baby's eyes with cotton wool and not metal. It's why your belt is made from flexible leather and not wood. It's why your rain coat is made from plastic and not glass. We investigated a range of materials today, explored what they are used for and we had great fun listening to a song teaching us about materials.
There's a chill in the air..... |
It's getting colder. The days are getting shorter. The nights are getting longer. The trees are bare. The winter woolies are coming out. Winter is definitely here! We made winter wonderland trees in art this week. Check them out!

For the past few weeks we have been exploring our 5 senses and today we finished with our sense of smell. Our teacher brought in lots of different things. We had to close our eyes, smell them and try to guess what they were. Then we all got to spend some time smelling the different things to compare the smells.. There were some smells that were quite familiar to us like coffee but others were a bit unusual like almond essence. There were smells we loved like popcorn and chocolate and smells we weren't too fond of like sudocrem and nasal vicks. We had great fun guessing the different smells and loved learning all about our amazing bodies :-)
What would life be like if I couldn't see?
As part of our work on learning about our senses we all experienced what life would be like if we were blind. We each had a partner. One of us was blindfolded and the other was the guide.
Before we did the experiment we spoke about the role of the guide and blindfolded person. The guide has to pay attention, be gentle, thoughtful and always remember that they are responsible for the person who is blind. The person who is blind must put their trust in their guide and listen to them. The guide had to make sure her friend did not bump into the obstacles our teacher put out in the yard.
Then we swapped over so everyone got a chance to be a guide and be blindfolded. We had lots of fun and giggles along the way but the really big thing we learned was that we are all so lucky to have our sense of sight.

This week we have been learning about the aimsir (weather). Cén sort aimsire atá ann? What sort of weather is it? Tá sé scamallach (couldy), te (hot), grianmhar (sunny), ag cur sneachta (snowing), ag cur báistí (raining) agus fuar (cold). We made cloudy rainbows in art this week to show all the different weathers we seem to be having these days!
We have 5 senses and today we were exploring our sense of taste. We use our tongue to taste. There are taste buds on our tongue that send a message to our brain telling it if we like or dislike the taste of a food. There are 5 tastes - sweet, bitter, sour, salty and savoury (spicy!)
We each got a tasting plate today and we all tasted different foods to test our taste buds. For sweet we had a sugary jelly. For bitter we had orange. For sour we had natural yoghurt For salty we had popcorn. For savoury we had spicy crisps. There were smiles, thumbs up, thumbs down, squirmy faces and scrunched up noses but most of all there were plenty of laughs as we tucked into our tastes...such fun :-)

Look how scary and beautiful and wonderful we looked today!
Look at what we enjoy doing!
We have been discovering how special and unique we all are. We all look different, have different personalities and different interests. We are celebrating these differences because they make us special and beautiful. Check out our amazing display showcasing our interests!
For the month of October we were focusing on the area of athletics in PE. This involved learning the different ways of moving, jumping, throwing and catching. We finished up our module today by doing station work incorporating all the skills we have learned. We moved from station to station as we wished and had lots of fun with our friends.
The fun and learning just never ends! Ms Henry has been busy organising Maths Week which we are celebrating in our school this week. There are lots of fun activities organised such as maths trails, story time, maths quiz, board game play time and lots more. Our teacher will add photos to our slideshow everyday so you can see some of the fun maths activities we are enjoying this week in school.
Look at our
Halloween decorations!!!
Last week was our first time to work with clay and it was lots of fun. Clay goes hard very easily so we had to work quickly. It also breaks when it gets too hot so we tried to use the coldest parts of our hands when we were working with our clay...our finger tips.
We made a witch's cauldron. First we rolled our clay into a ball. Then we used our thumb to make a hole. We used our finger tips to spread out the cauldron and make it look real and we used match sticks to make decorations on it. We then left it to dry and go hard. Most of us had never touched clay before and it was fun smelling it, touching it and learning what clay can be turned into. Today we painted our cauldrons and got them ready for the bats, blood, eyes and all the other bits the witches will put into them!!!

Check out our cutting skills now!
Since we started junior infants 7 weeks ago, we have been learning how to cut. We started by practising cutting straight, even lines in different sized squares. Then we moved on to cutting triangles and gradually we started cutting curved lines in circles. This week we took our challenge to a whole new level and gave it our best shot! We had to colour, cut and paste a Halloween cat....there were lots of curved lines and narrow bits but we tired to remember the golden rule - our cutting hand doesn't move and it's the hand holding the paper that does all the turning. Look at our scary but super cut cats!!
We've been busy getting ready for Halloween here in school and definitely getting into the spirit of it all! We made creepy crawly spiders and spooky ghosts and they're putting a chill down everyone's spine :-) Check out our 'spooktalular' creations!!
Our school held a Go for Gold day for Down Syndrome Ireland to celebrate its 50th year providing support and services for people with Down Syndrome across Ireland. Everyone was encouraged to wear something yellow or gold and to donate €2 to the charity. We all went out to the school field and ran a lap (or 2 or 3 or whatever each class were able for!!!) with the main aim of having fun and celebrating the wonderful work of Down Syndrome. Ms Parkinson and the girls in 6th class did an amazing job at cheering us all on and we each got a Go for Gold sticker to mark our achievement! We had so much fun that we even went out later in the day again to run another few laps of the field!
Jumping to success!
Who knew there could be so many different ways to jump! Jump off one foot, land on two / jump off two feet, land on two / jump over hoops / jump through hoops / jump from outside a hoop, land in it / jump around a hoop / hop in, hop out / take off on your left, land on your right / take off on your right foot, land on your left....the ways are endless! We had lots of fun doing PE today and exploring all the different ways we can use our legs to jump.
Learning in our sensory garden
Today we were learning about the life cycle of the oak tree. We went to our sensory garden and looked at the different parts of the tree. The roots suck up water to help the tree grow and stop it from falling over. The trunk holds the tree in place. The branches support the leaves and carry nutrients to them. The little buds on the tree blossom into flowers. We did lots of work on the 4 stages an oak tree goes through. It starts as an acorn, then the acorn sprouts, then it turns into a sapling and finally into a big oak tree. We had lots of fun exploring our beautiful school garden.

Busy workers in the morning!

Maths - learning how to sort
We've been learning how to sort things based on their size or colour or type of object. There are lots of ways you can decide to sort things. We helped Mrs Cervi to sort the classroom toys!
Staying fit and active!
I know you think that we're just here in school everyday but really we have been travelling all around the world for the past few weeks. Yes, it's true! PE lessons have taken us to Australia, Africa, Spain, Lollipopland, London Zoo and any other place our bodies (and imaginations!) have taken us. Today we were at the zoo. We saw giraffes, snakes, lions, tigers, flamingos, elephants and we even tucked into popcorn. In fact we WERE popcorn! We stretched, we ran and we had lots of fun with our friends in the sunshine today :-)
We have been learning about hedgehogs. They are going to hibernate soon and not come out until March. What a long sleep they'll have. They are busy eating lots of food to keep them full. They are nocturnal so they sleep during the day and wake during the night. The love to eat insects, worms, slugs, snails, frogs, fruit, grass and mushrooms. Hedgehogs will walk for hours to find enough food to eat.
They have every bad eye sight but an excellent sense of smell. They live up to 6 years. Hedgehogs like to be left alone and if they get scared, they curl themselves up into a little ball. Their backs are covered in about 6000 spines. We made our own hedgehogs and we used brown paint and forks to make the spines. We hope you like them. Don't they look so cute! We're also learning a poem about hedgehogs.

The Hedgehog
The prickly little hedgehog,
Goes slowly on his way.
He likes the evening twilight,
And often sleeps by day.
He’s a gentle little fellow,
Who does no harm at all.
But if you try to hurt him,
He’ll curl up in a ball.

We celebrated kind and caring week in school this week. We listened to a story called 'The Rainbow Fish' which we loved. It is a story about a beautiful fish who had the most colourful, shiny scales. However, he didn't want to share his scales with any of the other fish in the sea. One day he realised that he had no friends around him because he had been unkind to the other fish.
He went to ask the wise octopus what to do. He suggested that the Rainbow Fish give away one of his beautiful scales and see how he feels. He gave one scale to the Little Blue Fish. The Little Blue Fish was so happy that he swam in circles around and around smiling happily. Seeing the Little Blue Fish happy made the Rainbow Fish feel happy too. He decided to give away all his shiny scales to the fish in the ocean until he only had one left for himself. Even though he did not have his beautiful scales anymore, he was much happier. Learning to share made him feel really good about himself and all the fish wanted to play with him then.
We tried really hard to be extra kind and caring this week. We made our own Rainbow Fish. They might only have one shiny scale but they are the happiest, kindest fish in the ocean.

Learning how to cut
We have been learning how to cut this week. We have to sit properly, hold our scissors correctly and hold our paper carefully. We tried hard to cut along the black line, making sure not to leave any white on the outside or cut away the coloured bit inside. We did a wonderful job of our first ever colour, cut and paste!
Our bodies are AMAZING!
We have been learning all the wonderful things our bodies can do. Our bodies can eat, sleep, think, hop, jump, stretch, sit, twist, twirl, cry, grow, jog, stand, skip, repair, eat, hold, drink, drive, swim, kick and so much more. We went to the yard and practised doing some of these things. To keep our bodies able to do all of these things, we really have to take care of them too.
