Our story begins here!
Another school year begins and with it comes lots of wonderful days to look forward to and memories to create. We hope you enjoy getting a little glimpse into what happens in our class throughout the year. We love sharing some of our school activities with the people we love.
March 2020
- Let us share with you what we were up to today in our music class. There is a good chance you heard us from your homes or workplaces but all in great spirit!!!
- We listened as our teacher read the story 'Larry Long Ears.'. From this we had to name the 5 main characters in the story.
- Then we thought of adjectives to describe these characters.
- Next we thought of a phrase that each character might day.
- From there we practiced how the character would say that phrase.
- Next we added in a body movement to show how the character would move and use her / his body when saying the phrase.
- Finally we had to add percussions to portray how our character would move and speak through the medium of music.
February 2020
We use forces every day and without it, many things just wouldn't work. Force makes things move, slow down, stretch, twist, fall, speed up, lift, float, sink, carry objects....the list is endless.
We made parachutes today to explore how moving objects can be slowed down. We had a great giggle talking sky diving and how our teacher would never be able to do a sky dive since the trip up in the plane to actually do it, would scare her half to death let alone jumping out of it1 So these parachutes were the closest she was ever going to get to sky diving!
We had such fun making our parachutes and testing them out. We don't normally stand on tables but there are some things that require a little bit of rule breaking!!

What comes into your mind when you hear the word LOVE? That was the question put to us today as we were handed a lump of clay too. Love and clay....create whatever you want. We have left our clay pieces to dry and on Wednesday we will paint them and give them to our very own valentine on Friday. Lots of mums and dads are in for a treat!
OUR very own Booterstown Avenue!
We promised you we'd keep you posted and after 3 hard weeks constructing our Booterstown buildings...here they are in all their glory! From architects to builders........ we've got it all!!
We may not have thought it this morning as the sharp wind cut through us in our line but indeed, Spring is finally here. Daffodils have started to appear and what a beautiful sight it is. We started our morning by making warm apple crumble served with cream or custard, Such a simple recipe, only 5 ingredients needed and a great treat if you have some leftover apples at home. Delicious!
January 2020
We've been busy bees here in school this month working on our art projects. Each pair were given a building in Booterstown and working together we had to plan, construct and design the building ready to present to the class next week.
Here's a list of the buildings we're working on:
Gleesons
Clarks
Pembroke Cottage
Our Lady of Mercy
Fre House Pizza
Winnies cafe
The Radisson Hotel
The Old Punch Bowl
We'll show you the finished products next week!

We are having a wonderful week in school celebrating healthy living. We engaged in a range of activities all encouraging us to be as healthy as we can be physically, mentally and emotionally. Let us share with you some of the things we have been up to:
Meditation
Designing lunch boxes and menus encouraging a balanced diet
Fruit and veg tastings
The mile run
A lesson on oral hygiene
and we are looking forward to it continuing tomorrow with Walk a Mile with a Smile and the healthy food buffet in the hall.

Experimenting with Experiments
Here in 2nd / 3rd class we love science. Science is all around us and we have had great fun doing lots of experiments and testing in class. Here's what we have been up to:
- Firstly we made hot chocolate to see how a powder changes in terms of its texture, colour, taste and smell when mixed with hot water.
- We tried to work out what the best insulator is to keep boiling water as hot as possible. So we poured boiling water into 4 glasses and used a thermometer to get the temperature. We covered one glass in a thermal bottle bag, another in tinfoil, the third in cling film and the last one in a towel. We left them there for about 3 hours before getting the temperature of each. In order from best to worst insulator it was: thermal bag, tin foil, towel and finally cling film.
- On Monday we made jelly, again to see how a solid changes to a liquid but also how refrigeration makes it turn to a solid again.
- We were learning about how pulleys are used in everyday life to work things such as gym weights, wells, cranes and curtain blinds. Ava kindly took a photo of the pulley construction she made out of Lego which she got this Christmas.
- Today we tested what happens to solids and liquids when they are heated. We tested things such as chocolate, butter, golden syrup and toothpaste.
- On Thursday we tested how far a car can travel off a ramp of different surfaces. The car travelled down the ramp and we measured its finishing distance using a metre stick. One surface was carpet, another lino, another jagged plastic, another sandpaper and finally light shiny plastic.
- Today was our last experiment day so we tried to figure out what the best cooler is to keep milk at its lowest temperature. We filled 4 glasses with milk and covered them in 4 different items: thermal bag, bubble wrap, a woolen hat and parchment paper. At the start the temperature of the milk was 10 degrees. 3 hours later we unwrapped each and rechecked their temperature then. The woolen hat was the best at keeping the milk cool....it came in at 18 degrees. There was little difference between the other 3 with each glass coming in at 19 / 20 degrees celcius. Great fun!
Let us tell you about symmetry!
The girls in 2nd laass have been learning about symmetry in maths this week. Something is symmetrical when it is the same on both sides. A shape has symmetry if a central dividing line (a mirror line) can be drawn on it, to show that both sides of the shape are exactly the same. Symmetry is all around us and some shapes can have many lines of symmetry.
We made symmetrical paintings this morning... Check them out!

Loving gymnastics with Ms Tighe!
What a wonderful Christmas we had and we were DYING to return to school this morning....well maybe 'dying to' is a slight exaggeration but it was great to see all our fiends again and share our Christmas news with one another. As part of our English programme we are learning how to do procedural writing. We had to follow steps to make hot chocolate and be able to record the process in a logical way supplying only the information needed.
It's hard but somebody had to do it......what's that you ask? Yes! Taste it! Lovely hot chocolate with marshmallows on top...what better way to cheer us up on a gloomy, wet Monday morning on the first day of term!

December 2019
We're all rushing here and there...buying gifts, writing cards, decorating the house, making cakes and preparing for the arrival of Santa on Christmas Eve. However here in school we are trying to remember the true meaning of Christmas... Christmas is about family, love and making memories, reaching out to others and ultimately bringing us closer together as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
We want you to step away from the busyness surrounding Christmas. and to take a moment to ask yourself why are we doing all of this anyway? Check out our beautiful artwork

Spending some special time with our friend Olivia
Today was our last day having Olivia in our class. We love her and she is a great friend to us, We will miss her but we know she will settle really well into her new school and make lots of new friends. Thanks Olivia for brightening up our class everyday with your beaming smile. Love from the girls in 2nd / 3rd class x
Bhí lá iontach (great day) againn inniu. Gaeilge 24 a bhí ann agus bhí orainn iarracht a dhéanamh Gaeilge a labhairt (try to speak Irish) don lá ar fad.
Bhí imeachtaí eagraithe (activities organised) ag gach muinteoir agus chuamar ó rang go ráng ag gleachadh páirt (taking part). Rinneamar tráth na gceist (table quiz), cluichí foclóra (vocabulary games), damhsa agus amhrán a fhoghlaim (learn a dance and song) agus chuichí ar na leabhair Chrome a imirt (played games on the Chromebooks).
Míle buiochas do Ms Ní Fhaoláin as ucht Gaeilge 24 agus lá iontach a eagrú (Thanks to Ms Ní Fhaoláin for organising a wonderful day).
Welcome to the club Poppy!
Over the last few weeks we have been learning all about milk. We examined the different types of milk available in the shops, the milk allergies that some people have, foods made with milk as its main ingredient, the nutritional value of milk in our diet and how milk gets from the cow's udder to our kitchen table. To conclude our work on milk we made vanilla milkshakes in school today. Milk, icecream and vanilla extract........mix in a blender and serve.....delicious!!
Sock Puppets...check them out!
|
What colourful and unique sock puppets we made. They brighten up our classroom!

Today the girls in 2nd class were treated to a visit to Dubrary Bookshop to meet Laura Ellen Anderson. When she’s not trying to take over the world or fighting sock-stealing monsters, Laura Ellen Anderson is a professional children’s book author and illustrator, with an increasing addiction to coffee. She spends every waking hour creating and drawing, and would quite like to live on the moon when humans finally make it possible. Laura is the creator of EVIL EMPEROR PENGUIN and the illustrator of WITCH WARS, as well as many other children’s books. AMELIA FANG is her first series as an author-illustrator.
Laura chatted to us about her road to becoming an author, what inspires her, how she creates her characters and what her favourite authors and books were to read as a child. Laura then showed us how to draw two of her characters and we all got to do our own sketches. We all had a great time and it was wonderful to spend time with our 2nd class friends from Ms Murray's class.

November: Remembering those who have passed away
During the month of November, we take the time to remember those we love who have passed away. Our class hosted assembly today for the school. We sang two beautiful songs ;Supermarket Flowers' by Ed Sheeran and 'Rainbow' by Kasey Musgrave. We said prayers and showed the school our beautiful artwork. We each drew a picture of someone we know who has passed away and are in heaven. What a lovely start to the day it was.
October 2019

We had THE BEST day! The day of our midterm Halloween holiday arrived and we cl came to school adorned in the most amazing costumes. From dead brides to colourful clowns and everything in between.....we really looked the part!
|
Next we had the walk of fame were we went outside and took part in the Halloween parade to show all the mums and dads how brilliant we looked!
|
|
|
All the classes met back in the hall then where each class performed a Halloween song on the stage. The 2nd class girls joined with Ms MUrray's class and we sang Halloween Stomp. The 3rd class girls joined their friends in Ms Ní Fhaoláin's class and they rocked it out! If our songs didn't get you into the Halloween spirit, nothing will!
|
Of course we had to enjoy some Halloween treats today and with the rain lashing down all day, a giggle, a chat and treats with our friends was the perfect 'pick me up!' We had chocolate apples, a mini Halloween muffin and orange squash. Devilishisly yummy!

The girls in 3rd class were treated to a wonderful meet and greet today in Stillorgan Library with the author Gerard Siggons. Gerard Siggins was born in Dublin in 1962. Initially a sports journalist, he worked for many years in the Sunday Tribune, where he became assistant editor. He has written several books about cricket and rugby. His Rugby Spirit series has sold over 50,000 copies and is hugely popular with sports-loving children around the world. Gerard regularly visits schools to talk about his books.
Gerard answered our many questions and also read extracts from his books. We really enjoyed our trip out and it was great being there with our many pals from Ms Ni Fhaolain's class too!

Maths Week!
|
Maths week started on Monday with a mathematical workshop taught by Lisa and Roberta. The girls in Mrs Cervi's 3rd class joined Ms Ní Faaoláin's 3rd class and we had an amazing time.. Some of the things we did were learning about fractions, solving time problems and building a jail using Kennex. Lisa and Roberta really showed us how fun maths is and how it's used in everyday life.
|
On Tuesday we went to the hall for a maths blitz. There were loads of activities to choose from such as Jenga, Chromebook maths games, snakes and ladders, dominoes, connect 4, pizza fractions and mental maths games on the ipads. We had a blast!
|
|
|
Today was maths trail day. Clipboards in hand and worksheets ready, we went around the school trying to answer the many maths questions put to us! What great fun!
|
How lucky were we today to be treated to a wonderful maths lesson by Clara's dad Mark .As one of the girls said afterwards 'it was amazing. It was like a history and maths lesson all in one.' Thanks Mark!

On this road there are homes to suit everyone....apartments, bungalows, cottages, mansions, terraced, semidetached..............the options are endless. Houses are on view every weekend...just Call us up to make an appointment!
Getting great use out of our Chrome Books!
The Chromebooks have been wonderful at supporting our learning and helping to develop many different skills. The girls in 3rd class used them today to do some research for their homework tonight. They had to choose and animal, gather information about it and complete a report on the animal.
2nd class used the Chromebooks to play lots of maths games based on what we are learning in our maths programme. Next week we are going to use the Chromebooks to develop typing skills and learn how to put in different punctuation marks, paragraphs and so on.
You see mum and dad.................screen time CAN be useful!!!

An up and coming artist -
Veronika Kvasnystaka
We are so lucky to have an amazing artist in our class. Veronika was the inspiration behind our art craft this week. We painted 'trees in the dark night sky' and we are so proud of them. You see, Veronika gave Mrs Cervi a gift last week of this painting and when our teacher saw it, she said, 'Oh my, we have to do this painting in school with all the girls.' They are on display outside our classroom and everybody who has seen them has come in and told is they are just fabulous! Have a look!
What does GOD look like to you?
This was the question put to us yesterday and immediately our minds started racing. We were allowed to use any media and materials to show how we saw God. This threw us at first because more often than not in school, the teacher directs us and sets the work for us to complete. This time however, it was all left up to us.
We worked in groups of 4 and started by making a plan. We designed amazing posters and presented them to the class. God can look different ways to everyone and that's perfectly fine. Have a look at our creations!

As part of our history programme, are learning about games played in the past. Now our teacher had never felt old until last Monday when a child in our class says, 'Mrs Cervi, what games did you play long long ago when you were a child?'
;Girls I'm not THAT old' our teacher replied!! However despite the pain and shame, she brought us down to the hall to play some of her favourite childhood games. We had a blast!

Mathematicians at Work!
Place Value is a very important part of maths. The girls in 2nd class are learning about tens and units. This is the foundation of all maths work so we are really getting stuck in, getting the head down and doing our very best. We love doing some hands on work with our place value packs!
September 2019
Things got a little heated today in our class when we had our debate 'classroom teaching is better than home schooling..' We had done some prior work at home and when our teacher saw some of us taking out pieces of paper with points written on them, she knew we meant business!! We had 3 judges who listened to both sides of the argument. Even though it was a very difficult choice to make, the winners were the team saying homeschooling is better. Now our teacher hopes this result isn't a reflection of her classroom teaching but sure with mummies and daddies as amazing as ours, of course we'd prefer to be home schooled!!
Today was the day we put together all the basketball skills we have been learning throughout the month of September. We had a few great games of basketball today and each child played a part in helping her team get points on the scoreboard. It really was a team effort and when 2 teams were playing, the other 2 teams were shouting words of encouragement towards them from the sideline. What a game.....our teacher was so proud of us and we had such a great time playing with and against our pals.
Walk a Mile with a Smile!
We are 'bee-ing' kind and caring as we mark this special week in our school
So we're coming to the end of our basketball block in PE and it is all gearing up for our basketball matches this week and next. Today we did station work. At one station we had to run as we bounced and kept control of the ball. At the second station we were aiming into the basketball net. At the next station we were practicing our bounce pass and chest pass and at the final station we had to bounce a ball on the spot while looking up at our partner and calling out how many fingers she was holding up. We all rotated from group to group and our teacher is so proud of the progress we have made with our basketball skills over the last few weeks. Check us out!
We are called to be followers of Jesus
We have been learning that just as Jesus chose this 12 disciples, we too have been chosen to be Jesus' followers. We must try to spread love and kindness to everyone. As Jesus says ;love one another as I have loved you.'
- As part of our comprehension story 'Where is Max?' which is a story about Luke's 9th birthday party, we became the party hosts and made some delicious fairy buns in school today. There were a few things we had to be able to do in order to make our buns. We had to::
- make sure our hands were clean and hair was tied up
- preheat our oven
learn what a sieve, wire rack, bun tray and bun cases are used for
weigh our ingredients
follow the rescipe step by step
work out what time the buns will be ready by based on the time they went in at and how long they take to bake
leave them to cool on the wire rack and finally the best part, - BRING THEM HOME TO EAT!!!
Our class is very special because we are made up of 4 different groups of girls from 4 different classes, coming together to make one class. We are getting on great and it is such fun getting to know other girls. We are making new friends in our multi-grade class but we also enjoy catching up with our friends in 2nd class and 3rd class too.
Fun in the sun!
The sun was shining and what better way to spend an afternoon than outside doing PE with all our friends. We are focusing on basketball skills this month and it was great fun!
Learning cursive handwriting!
The girls in 2nd class are working hard on learning cursive handwriting this year and the girls in 3rd class are perfecting their beautiful letter formation. When we are learning capital and lower case letters in cursive scripts, we practice by forming the letters in the air, on our tables, on each others backs, we form them in sand, we form them with play doh before practicing them in our cursive handwriting copies. We also love the few minutes at the end of the lesson where we get to be 'kids' again and make whatever we want from play doh. Sssshhhhh, don't tell anyone!!
